| Walk on April 26: Amah's Rock |
Its been like forever since we went to Amah's Rock. This is quite an easy hill actually its not even a hill so we will do Mclehose Section 4 before turning to the short trail towards Amah's rock. The weather is getting slightly warmer and the maximum height for the day will be about 300 metres so this will be a two booter and an easy paced one. We will meet this coming Sunday April 26 at the taxi stand in Sai Kung town at 11.30 AM (please note the revised meeting time) and share taxis from there so please carry some change. This walk is about 10-15 kilometres and has a stiff ascent to begin with but we do not plan to climb Ma On Shan. Wikipedia on Amah's Rock: According to a legend, the faithful wife of a fisherman climbed the hills every day, carrying her son, to watch for the return of her husband, not knowing he had been drowned at sea. In reward for her faithfulness she was turned into a rock by the Goddess of the Sea so that her spirit could unite with that of her husband. Similar legends abound throughout the whole of China - the number of "Mong Fu Shek" rocks in the country is a great one. Many Chinese classical poems were dedicated to this kind of rock. It is also a place of worship for Chinese women and stands as a symbol of women's loyalty and faithfulness. I wonder if there are such rocks for men, then maybe not!! If it is raining or threatening to rain (thunderstorm warning), the walk will not be cancelled. If in doubt on the morning of the walk, call 8209-0517. And remember -- don't be late! The ten minute waiting rule applies. Remember to bring all the usual gear, in particular lots of water, good shoes and a hat. Also, bring some lunch for along the way.
