All our walks are led by volunteers and are planned one week in advance.  If you don't see an itinerary on our homepage, that means no one has proposed anything yet.  And if one is not posted by Saturday, you can safely assume that there is no walk the following day.

We communicate via our website and we do not maintain a mailing list.

*excludes travelling time

1.   Of late there have been media reports about the HKSAR and Shenzhen Governments talking about developing the Lok Ma Chau ‘Loop'.  We must now seize the day to explore the Loop Area before the capitalists and communists join hands to turn the area into a concrete jungle.  This day is the coming Sunday, 4 th May 2008..... Read More .

2.    We'll meet at 10.45 a.m. at the Customer Services/Ticket office inside the Sheung Shui Train Station on the East Rail (Sheung Shui is the station before Lo Wu Station right at the border).  From Sheung Shui, we'll proceed to Ma Tso Lung and start our walk there to Lok Ma Chau.  This stretch of the walk is just one inch away from the Border Line and we'll literally be edging on a forbidden land.  Therefore, you must bring your HK Identity Card with you to the walk, unless you want to risk being snatched by the capitalist border guards and repatriated to the communist motherland.  If you do not have a HK Identity Card, you should bring your passport.  The walk offers an excellent bird's eye view of the Loop Area which lies within the Border Closed Area.

3.    After exploring the Loop, we'll walk to Nam Sang Wai via Ki Lun Shan (222m) and Kai Kung Leng (572m).  The sunset at Nam Sang Wai as we descend Kai Kung Leng.should be beautiful if it is a clear day.

4.    This is going to be a long walk.  However early exit is possible after we have done the Loop and before climbing up to Ki Lun Shan/ Kai Kung Leng.

5.    The walk is mostly on exposed parts of the hills and so you are strongly advised to bring a hat and enough water.

6.     The walk itself is not too difficult.  It is graded as a three booter partly because of the long distance we are going to cover.

7. .......Bring all the usual things, a lunch, a torch, sun block, mos spray and if weather looks dodgy, rain gear.

8. .......Among the paraphernalia that you should bring, I would highlight a torch, as we may finish the walk late. Needless to say you must bring enough water.

9. .......If it rains or thunderstorms are threatening, the walk might be cancelled.  If in doubt, call the trampers hotline 8209-0517 in the morning.

Francis

Disclaimer:-
People join this walk and any other walks organised by me at their own risks.  I shall not be held responsible in any way for any injury or death incurred or any loss or damage to personal property caused due to whatever causes including, but not limited to, negligence, neglect, errors of judgment and inadequate orientation skills on my part.  The fact that you show up at the time and place on the day to join the walk is an implication that you have agreed to and accepted unconditionally this disclaimer.    Francis.

Note:- Please note that this walk and any other walks organised by me may finish late due to a host of different reasons.  The duration given on top of this walk proposal is only a rough estimate.  We may have to walk longer than the estimated time and so there is a possibility that we'll walk in the dark (i.e. after sunset).  It is prudent that you bring a small torch with you to this walk.

4. The “Forbidden” Walk Report
The “Forbidden” Walk Report

Pictures here

2008-05-04, 11AM HKT
25 thrill-seeking Trampers decided to join fearless leader Francis today in order to experience the thrill of the forbidden –a hike in the restricted zone- an area sandwiched between unbridled capitalism on one end and controlled communism on the other.

It starts
We boarded 5 green Taxis at 11.10AM. We drove around in circles for a while failing to locate the evasive Ma Tso Lung but after some help from the cabbie, we eventually managed to get there at around 11.30AM.

Mission-briefing
Francis quickly got into his military uniform. He was topless (for camouflage) and wore a customized hat (the portion for the head was chopped off. A red cotton towel was draped around the rim and held together by state-of-the-art paperclips). He then got the group together for the day’s mission-briefing. Our first half of the mission was to get to the Lok Ma Chau loop by hiking on a hostile trail. Some serious heavy artillery and rapid-fire machine guns would be aimed at us from the cigarette-land (Shenzhen, China). But, we were not required to be brave. In fact, surrendering to the mainland Chinese forces was always an option – actually, Francis encouraged it. We were to raise our arms and scream “prostitute from China – going back” in case a PLA solider pointed a gun at us.

Trail, what trail?
The adrenalin rush was high and everybody was energetic and ready to negotiate the hostile trail. Only one problem – we couldn’t find the trail! Commander-in-chief Francis and first Lt. Alex scattered off in different directions to identify the trail. Every now and then we thought we had identified the trail but had to quickly walk in reverse! To our rescue came a senior Special Forces advisor – an old lady (possibly an octogenarian) who spoke a secret language called ‘Hakka’. We were prepared. We had with us, a distinguished member of the Trampers, Major General Ringo, an expert marksman and a linguistics guru who speaks several languages including Hakka. Unfortunately, the SPF lady didn’t quite know where the trail was either!

Target identified
After a thorough reconnaissance of the area, leader Francis successfully identified the trail. The Trampers charged up the hostile trail forcefully. Another senior member of the Special Forces (a different old lady) didn’t like what she saw and unleashed a flow of verbal abuse at us! (plain old Cantonese this time –no secret language necessary for invectives-).

The Loop Area summit
We reached the summit of the Loop Area at 12.30PM. The contrasts were amazing. The beautiful Shenzhen river meandered around rice plantations in the foreground while skyscrapers from the communist Cigarette-land Shenzhen, China rose from the background. As evidence of our valor, we took several pictures in the restricted zone and successfully secured our bragging-rights. After a prolonged lunch we started making our way down towards Lok Ma Chau.

5 of the 25 trampers (including yours truly) took the early exit at Lok Ma Chau in order to tend to other pressing missions.

(Stay tuned for Part 2 of the ‘Forbidden’ report. To be written by the leader himself).
