All our walks are led by volunteers and are planned one week in advance.  If you don't see an itinerary on our homepage, that means no one has proposed anything yet.  And if one is not posted by Saturday, you can safely assume that there is no walk the following day.

We communicate via our website and we do not maintain a mailing list.

We will do a Three Booter walk this coming Sunday, 10th February 2008.  We will walk a part of Stage 7 on the MacLehose trail & Stage 8. It is a reasonably long hike about 15 Kilometres over Tai Mo Shan which is the highest mountain in Hong Kong.

We will meet outside the turnstiles at Sha Tin KCR opposite Delifrance at 11.00 AM and start walking from the station itself.  There is a nice path leading upto the Maclehose trail close to Needle Hill. From there we turn towards Lead Mine pass but we will skip Grassy Hill as it is just boring concrete. Tai Mo Shan at 954 metres is not that difficult and we should be able to make it down to Route Twisk in reasonable time.

If it is raining or threatening to rain (thunderstorm warning), the walk will be cancelled. If in doubt on the morning of the walk, call 8209-0517. The ten minute waiting rules applies and remember not to be late!

Bring all the usual gear, in particular lots of water, good shoes and a hat. Also, bring some lunch for along the way.

1. Hike report
Fourteen trampers turned up at the Shatin KCR including several new faces. It was really cold and we headed up the steps to the Ten Thousand Buddha Monastery. We spent some time looking around and walked through a tiny village to the trail connecting Shatin with the Maclehose. It was quite disappointing to see the whole trail turned into a set of concrete steps. From there on we hiked down to the Shing Mun reservoir for a short lunch.
Lutz showed us a gorgeous path up Tai Mo Shan. It was just terrific and took us slightly more than two and a half hours to reach the ridge. After that the trail up to Tai Mo Shan is just plain boring concrete so we immediately descended down towards a Ng Tung Chai village. From here Lutz took us down an alternate route via Scatter falls. The path was awesome through dense tropical forest and it never ceases to amaze us that places like this exist in Hong Kong. We were down near Tai Wo at around six pm. Rebecca introduced us to a terrific Chiu Chow restaurant in Tai Po and six trampers ended the hike with an excellent meal.

2. Alternative Walk
For anyone wishing to join a few Elders on a more intermediate walk on Sunday, a few of us will be meeting at Tung Chung MTR station at 11 am on Sunday to do a reprise (of sorts) of the Shek Pik to Tai O walk. This is an unplanned foray which will be completely made up in Tung Chung and no doubt re-worked repeatedly during the course of the walk. Those with bitter past experience of walks with the Elders and who are unworried about the prospects that presents are welcome to join. We tip our hats to those doing Tai Mo Shan. The alternative hotline on Sunday morning is 9062 6634.
