| Walk on Feb 7, 2008: Where Eagles Dare |
The wind slowly gathers speed as it sweeps across the South China Sea and by the time it reaches land it is already a raging Force 5. Making its way across Lantau it hits the first mountains and the valley forms a funnel making it go faster. By the time it hits the ridge it is already a Force 7 and two trampers are on all fours inching their way across. The trail on the knife edge ridge is very narrow and for two hours they make their way over one cone after the other. The wind is relentless and the ravines below are dark and menacing. At one point, they are perched on a ledge and when they look down there is just a long sheer 900 metre precipitous drop into oblivion - here you truly know "This is where only eagles dare." We'll meet at 10.20 am on Thursday, Feb 7, 2008 at the Central Ferry Pier for the 10.30 ferry to Mui Wo. We will take a gentle trail across the South side of Lantau and then reach Shek Pik from where we will take the South Ridge up Lantau Peak. This is a 5 boot hike only for the fact that it is downright dangerous. You must have a head for heights and expect to walk surely and carefully on this ridge. Once we are on the ridge there is absolutely no way back so you have no choice but to continue on to the summit. In case the trail is wet or there is even a hint of rain, we will change the route. Please carry a good lunch, some snacks, chocolates, energy bars and about 2 litres of water. Pl carry correct gear for strong wind. Please read the disclaimer again - I do not take any responsibility and you follow only at your own risk. If it is raining or threatening to rain (thunderstorm warning), the walk will not be cancelled. If in doubt on the morning of the walk, call 8209-0517. The ten minute waiting rule applies and remember not to be late!
