All our walks are led by volunteers and are planned one week in advance.  If you don't see an itinerary on our homepage, that means no one has proposed anything yet.  And if one is not posted by Saturday, you can safely assume that there is no walk the following day.

We communicate via our website and we do not maintain a mailing list.

To join this Sunday's walk you have to pass a simple test:

First step            :  Go to your bedroom

Second step        : Look in the mirror

Third Step           : Ask yourself this question "Am I Mad?"

If without a blink or any sort of hesitation you get back an emphatic "Yes!!" then please read on otherwise do not bother.

We'll meet at 8.30 am on Sunday, Jan 27, 2008 at the Tai Po market KCR station just outside the turnstiles near the ticket counters. Pl note the revised meeting time. From there we shall take a minibus or share taxis to Wu Kau Tang to start off on a 28.45 kilometres hike. The whole day will be spent on a long series of hills in the Plover Cove country park (21 Km) and for fun we have included the peninsula extension also (14 Km to & fro). This hike requires tremendous amount of endurance & stamina.

Pl come prepared for about seven to eight hours of tramping without many breaks and expect to walk at a very brisk pace. There are no exits on this hike. We will end the hike at our favourite Thai restaurant in Tai Mei Tuk.

Please carry a good sized lunch, some snacks, chocolates, energy bars and about 4 litres of water. We can cache part of our water just before hiking in the peninsula to lighten our backpack. A torch is an absolute must on this hike.

If it is raining or threatening to rain (thunderstorm warning), the walk will not be cancelled. If in doubt on the morning of the walk, call 8209-0517. The ten minute waiting rule applies and remember not to be late!

1. Hike report
Twelve really young trampers met up bright and early at Tai Po KCR, did I mention young oh yes I did – just in case the reader missed it!!
We set off by taxi to Wu Kau Tang and started the hike at 9.15 am. It was freezing and quite damp. The trail was still wet from the previous days’ rain. The first three hills are quite steep and we had set a very brisk pace. By the time we reached the third one all the layers were off and we were quite sweaty due to the 100% humidity. We hardly stopped as it was too cold and under two hours we were at the junction for the peninsula.
The trail after that was just superb, we took our group photo on the hill and then descended down to the valley floor. We reached a stream and took a left which was not what we had intended but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The trail passed through thick forest and was just awesome. We went round the hill and down to a beautiful cove, we reached an open grassy plateau with a glorious view. The trail was barely visible and we had very soft bush under our feet making it more demanding to hike uphill. We made it to the ridge and found the main trail. We had to forego going right to the end of the peninsula guess we were about a kilometer short of reaching the end. We definitely leave this for another day. We headed back to the main Plover Cove trail and bumped into Nathan who was hiking alone. Vince and Natasha raced ahead and we followed at a more sedate pace. We reached the dam without further incidents. Ten trampers seriously depleted the food stock in our favourite Thai restaurant and at the end of the meal insisted for the free ice cream , that was the whole point of this crazy hike right -- Free Ice Cream!!

2. Three for the Road
Thanks to all for a spiffing day. Speedboats were wonderful, including the drama of the police check! A good bit of scrambling and bush-bashing. Lutz, Liz and I were getting cold so we opted to go as fast as we could on the higher trail. 6 hours, maybe 15/18 km and I burned 4450 calories. Then dinner at Malibu in Tai Me Tuk, to taunts from Vivek about our inability to get out of bed for 8:30. Ace!!

3. Report of sane walk 25 Jan 2008
20 trampers enjoyed a day of fun, riding on speed boats, scrambling up rocks, meandering along sshore, and, of course, tramping. Sorry that one person withdrew on arrival at Sam Mun Tsai in anticipation of sea sickness. From where the speed boats unloaded us, we scrambled up the ridge and spent an hour going to Wong Chuk Kok Tsui and back. 17 visited Hung Shek Mun (Red Rock Gate) the second time under Francis' leadership on the way to Ha Miu Tin and arrived at Wu Kau Tan at 7.30 p.m. At a crisp pace the walk could have finished an hr earlier. 10 trampers dined in a dai pei dong in Tai Po.
