All our walks are led by volunteers and are planned one week in advance.  If you don't see an itinerary on our homepage, that means no one has proposed anything yet.  And if one is not posted by Saturday, you can safely assume that there is no walk the following day.

We communicate via our website and we do not maintain a mailing list.

Walk on Jan 6, 2008: Shek Pik to Tai O

Written by Vivek,

Distance Duration* Elevation Level of Difficulty

A very Happy New Year to all. We will kick off 2008 with what is probably the nicest bit of Hong Kong, a longish two booter walk from Shek Pik to Tai O. It is a nice way to ease into the new year especially so as in the next few weeks there are going to be a few belters.

We will meet at Tung Chung MTR at 11 AM outside the turnstiles at the Exit B near the fountain and  take a bus to the starting point of this hike.  The beginning of the walk is unfortunately a long concrete trail so it is best to get it over with right at the start. After that the trail hugs the coast and has  probably the best view of the South China Sea from Hong Kong. My favourite question to Hong Kong people is -  " Where is Fan Lau? " Surprisingly very few people have actually been able to answer this. We will have lunch there. There is a really nice remote beach and the path is gentle all along.

The trail is exposed and if it is windy  then it can get really chilly so definitely carry a fleece jacket or a spouse. In case any of the pretty girls are cold-- you are welcome to snuggle up with the hike leader. Hmm its a tough job you know....

If in doubt on the morning of the walk, call 8209-0517. And remember -- don't be late! The usual ten minute waiting rule applies.

Remember to bring all the usual gear, in particular two litres of  water, torch, good shoes, snacks, rain gear and a hat. Also, bring some snacks for along the way.

1. Walk Report
30 trampers turned up for the first hike of 2008, with one dear chap getting so excited that he turned up one day earlier on Saturday morning. We started off at the Shek Pik reservoir on a gentle but boring concrete trail till we reached the turn off for the Obelisk. The views of the ocean were just gorgeous and from there we found a barely discernible trail that lead us down to the beach. There was a small body of water that we needed to cross and Charlie was encouraging everyone to jump over so that we could get some fun pictures!!!

This remote beach another Tai Long Wan was beautiful and we broke for a late lunch. We continued on the beach and the rocks till we could not go any further. Now normal sane people would turn back and find a trail but no not us. We started scrambling up the rocks in search of the trail above our heads. The incline was quite steep with sheer drops into the ocean but we climbed on undeterred. Finally, we reached the Lantau trail again and made it to Fan Lau fort in the late afternoon to click our mandatory group picture.

On our previous hikes we had found the rest of the trail overgrown but this time it was quite clear and we reached Tai O just after 5 pm. From the village, we hired two sampans to Tung Chung. It was an absolutely superb ride, the sun just setting and the sky was tinged with hues of orange. Another terrific day out with the Trampers.
