thanks peter (kwong) for your help, this is a follow-up:
we got to lantau island last saturday and stayed at the silver mine inn in mui wo. by that time, we had changed our plan slightly because we had found a hike from ngong ping to tung chung in a hk tourist handout. since we were unfamiliar with lantau, and the tour handout had pictures and a detailed description, we felt more confident. however, the manager at the inn said he was an avid hiker and claimed that hike was short and boring. he suggested going from tai'o to the tung chung road - about 3 hours he said. we rode the bus to tai'o and only made it to the shum wat road in 4 hours:

obviously, we are flat landers to take so long to go half the distance.
and although we didn't do the exact hike that we discussed, we probably would never have made it to lantau, if you had not been so kind to help us out.
thanks again,
david
p.s. we are planning to go from the road to ngong ping and down the boring path to tung chung next year.
